Across continents, climates and cultures, three threads bind the stories in this issue: the relentless pursuit of progress, the courage to create and the profound connection between humanity and the world around us.

This issue is a celebration of London, which even in uncertain times, champions the values we at OutThere hold dear: inclusion, creativity and the audacity to live – and travel – authentically. Because if ever there was a moment to remind the world what power diversity brings, it’s now. And if ever there was a place to remind us that it’s possible, it’s London. As the world at large grows more divided, London – as if in defiance – thrives... gloriously, imperfectly, as a living, breathing poster child for diversity. A city that proves that beauty, expression, creativity and culture bloom brightest when people from every walk of life, persuasion, colour and creed, collide, coexist and collaborate.

We also head out into the world to celebrate other people, places and ideas that refuse to stand still. We flirt once more with Mykonos and Bali, and head to Chile’s Atacama Desert, Australia’s Red Centre and Okinawa.

In this edition of OutThere we step off the well-trodden path – not just for novelty, but for nuance. And in pursuit of that nuance, we journey to Salvador, Brazil… it’s a place that you feel and immerse in, far more than you see and visit. Bahia’s capital is also a showcase of Afro-Brazilian heritage, a place where the legacies of resistance, resilience and creativity are woven into every rhythm, ritual and recipe – stories not just of survival, but of vibrant expression, community pride and spiritual depth.

We also return to the original luxury – nature – today providing something else of rare value: context. And we’re reminded that to experience nature with humility, curiosity and care is perhaps the most sophisticated journey of all. We head to Australia to swim with whale sharks, to Namibia to spot rare black rhinos in the wild, to Rwanda in search of silverback gorillas and to South Africa to check in on the welfare of fellow humans in KwaZulu-Natal.

We also drop into French Polynesia to witness the legacy in conservation left by a Hollywood superstar, at The Brando. And legacy plays a rather important role too in the places we’ve curated for this issue, from a husband-and-husband owned private farmstead in Norway, to a legendary hotel in Provence that has returned two decades after it shuttered at the turn of the millennium.

OutThereThe Experientialist Awards Issue, Volume II https://www.outthere.travel/product/outthere-the-experientialist-awards-issue-volume-2/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 11:54:17 +0000 https://www.outthere.travel/?post_type=product&p=59853 OutThere – The Experientialist Awards Issue, Volume II
ISSN: 2633-0539
Printed in the United Kingdom

In this issue, we announce the winners of The Experientialist® Awards – our heartfelt initiative to celebrate travel’s most thoughtful and transformative innovations. We champion the brands and individuals who place people, purpose and the planet before profits – those whose work leaves a positive imprint on both their guests and the world at large. We honour the initiatives, ideas and leadership that have reshaped luxury travel, giving rise to a new paradigm of what it means to travel with meaning, and those whose actions reflect the core values that define us: diversity, discovery and discernment.

The stories of our winners and finalists are inspiring: remarkable narratives of tireless dedication to communities, the environment and the future of travel. They challenge us all to rethink how we travel and the impact we leave behind. They encourage us to celebrate life – its adventures, culture, sophistication, escapism and hedonism – and the boundless joy that OutThere travel can bring.

The rest of this edition delves deeper into these pivotal themes, spotlighting other journeys and experiences that exemplify enriching, responsible and community-driven tourism. We head to Crail, a fishing village (population 1,200) in Scotland, where a husband-and-husband team has opened an inn and won over locals once wary of change. For other lesser-told stories, we explore the British Virgin Islands, Costalegre in Mexico, Mozambique, and the deserts of Utah. And because responsible travel is not just about embracing the unfamiliar, but also about finding different ways to experience our favourite destinations while supporting and celebrating locals and their enriching diversity, we return to Costa Rica, Illinois and Vienna.

Paris is turning. Turning bigger, greener, queerer, more outward-looking, more accessible, more creative and, on countless measures, way, way more diverse. A new generation of Parisians have revolutionised the city’s lifestyle culture. While that famous French spirit of resistance fended off many of the homogenising encroachments of globalisation, allowing independent enterprises to continue to thrive in central areas which in other cities would now be dominated by generic chain brands, a worldly new energy has channelled that indie spirit to remake the city’s art, cuisine, commerce and leisure landscapes in ways that are markedly more progressive and intersectional, while still unmistakably Parisian. The classic attractions and experiences, world-renowned landmarks of France’s cherished patrimoine, of course remain unmissable, but today come gift-wrapped in an unprecedentedly open and cosmopolitan urban culture.

Not content with just hopping across the English Channel, we travel all the way to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific as it takes a giant leap forward, joining the revelries at the archipelago nation’s first LGBTQ+ Pride celebration. In South Africa, we meet the husband-and-husband team behind a beautiful hideaway that gives new meaning to living unlimited. We also check out two whimsical resorts in the Caribbean that both play by their own rules. And back closer to home, we return to mystical Venice to imbibe a new and unexpected homegrown creative energy. Our winter experiences special (launched at the height of Northern-Hemisphere summer, no less) also shakes up traditional notions of Alpine adventure – and indulgence.

In this issue, we remain committed to spotlighting stories and forging partnerships that best reflect the diversity of the world’s communities and to platforming the minorities in the travel space whose voices may not be as heard as they deserve to be. Our mission at OutThere is to inspire people to go places – in every sense. So, we're thrilled to feature the US State of California, a tireless bastion of inclusivity across America’s 50 states. We tell its stories from north to south and everywhere in between, and highlight through an OutThere lens its diverse people, passions and places, its legacy of freedom and exciting visions for its future.

Further dialling up the feel-good factor, we skip the border north into the wilds of western Canada to be enfolded by the great outdoors. We return to South Africa to meet two women who are championing nurture in nature in quietly spectacular style. In search of cultural healing, we head to Dresden in Germany and encounter some unexpected depths. We also scout the far reaches of our globetrotting radars on two far-flung islands. In Sumba, Indonesia, we check in at one of the world’s most luxurious tropical resorts for some poignant soul – or rather, foal – searching. Across the Indian Ocean, we helicopter into Nosy Ankao, an island off the coast of Madagascar, to find yet more rarefied adventures and no less lavish comforts.

In this issue, we showcase the winners and finalists from The Experientialist® Awards, our not-for-profit, philanthropy-driven awards programme. We recognise and applaud the brands and people from across our big and beautiful world that have delivered truly OutThere initiatives, ingenious and innovative ideas, original and dynamic experiences, unparalleled leadership and community-first approaches in luxury travel, rooted in our core values of diversity, discovery and discernment.

This issue contains heartwarming tales of deep dedication to putting people, purpose and planet firmly ahead of profits; of boundary-pushing pioneers who are redefining what it means to be global citizens; of celebrated living and the very best in culture, sophistication and hedonism.

But it’s not a complete departure from our usual programming, as we take a deep dive – in partnership with Meet Boston – to discover the 23 distinct neighbourhoods that make up the diverse Massachusettsan city. We journey over to Dutchess County in upstate New York to explore a wonderfully artsy and liberal expression of the American Dream. We head to lesser-known Greece, to go both deep into history and high into the new identity of the storied island of Kalymnos. We learn to trust our gut on two very different retreats in Austria and Portugal. And we launch our first-ever special about exceptional journeys on water, showcasing the new wavemaker in luxury oceanfaring and another anchored in rich heritage and legacy.

‘Luxury travel, reimagined.’ That’s what all our insights about OutThere travel in this age point to. Today, more than ever, we overwhelmingly want to make journeys across the world to connect (and reconnect) with ourselves, our loved ones and local communities. This isn’t anything new per se, as it’s the very tenet of transformative travel, but it has become obvious to me that the connections we seek are far more aligned with positive humanity than ever before.

In this issue, we are thrilled to have gone out into the world on journeys that reimagine travel in this way. We get OutThere down under in sublime South Australia to experience the state's diverse and inclusive offerings, including its free and easy capital Adelaide, or Tarntanya in the language of its Aboriginal peoples. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land – the setting for one of our most inspirational journeys to date – with full respect to their Elders, past and present. With ‘to infinity and beyond’ as our guiding principle, we head to other far-flung continents and hidden gems. We also push the boundaries of experience in some of our favourite destinations. We board state-of-the-art cruise liner Silver Endeavour on her maiden voyage to Antarctica. We’re among the first international storytellers to return to Cuba after the pandemic. In an Italian double-bill, we rediscover Lake Como, to review its ultra-exclusive, new escape, as well as heading to Florence, to see the same masterpieces but through queer eyes. We also make a voyage of a lifetime to Kenya to learn some great lessons about life.

Malta has – at least since the 1600s, but perhaps going even further back – long been a place for those looking to enjoy some luxury, sophistication and perhaps even hedonism away from home. The archipelago nation is something of a hidden gem. Its multi-cultural history, combined with its position in the Mediterranean at the confluence of trading routes means that a cosmopolitan way of living isn’t new to the country and some of the very best worldly experiences are available to those who seek them (and know where to look).

Also in this issue, our Experientialist®s travel to five states in the southeastern USA to find out just how restorative travel can be and its unfailing potential to recalibrate our sense of perspective. We return to Africa after a pandemic-driven hiatus, to check out four unique safari expeditions, each in different parts of the continent, in our first-ever Safari Special. In two rather contrasting Basecamp experiences, we go in search of ‘liberated luxury’ to find paradise in the Caribbean and a spirit of adventure out skiing under the Scandinavian midnight sun. We’re also inspired by another couple of OutThere Innkeepers who have found a new life in the countryside just outside Berlin and are sharing it with the world.

This issue encapsulates a new, travel mindset that we see rapidly emerging, centred all around footloose living, deepening curiosities, a greater desire for inclusivity and more open-minded lifestyles. We now travel to fulfil bigger dreams, burgeoning imaginations and a hunger for the truly unique. No longer content that things are out of our reach, we’re looking to get truly OutThere. We hope that this issue will inspire you to do just that.

OutThereThe Thailand Rediscovered Issue https://www.outthere.travel/product/outthere-the-thailand-rediscovered-issue/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 13:14:04 +0000 https://www.outthere.travel/?post_type=product&p=37976 OutThere – The Thailand Rediscovered Issue
ISSN: 2633-0539
Printed in the United Kingdom

Ten years ago, we came up with the idea to create a luxury travel publication that told stories about our world in an inclusive way, one that is all about diversity, discovery and discernment. We knew that our own community of LGBTQ+ travellers was looking for more, and so was a wider audience, who never saw themselves represented in the mainstream press and didn’t always feel celebrated or that they ‘belonged’ as they travelled the globe.

Having recently launched its ‘Go Thai. Be Free.’ diversity programme, the Tourism Authority of Thailand recognised that it shared our values. So, we partnered up to make the first-ever issue of the then OutThere/Travel, ‘The Amazing Thailand Issue’. To celebrate a decade in print, we’ve come full circle, again with its support, to showcase what amazing new chapters lie in store there.

We explore the concept of healing in our Topography section, where our Experientialists report back from Mexico and The Islands of Tahiti. We visit a hotelier couple, who – in a way that only OutThere folk can – straddle properties in Provence and Bali. And, on the theme of coming full circle, we revisit the first hotel we ever reviewed in NYC.
